MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. (WTVO) — Kevin Bonnell, 44, was arrested after he drunkenly crashed into another man’s car and then attacked the victim with a knife and a lighter when the man tried to prevent him from leaving the scene, police said.

On Thursday, around 8:39 p.m., Machesney Park Police and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash at West Lane and Forest Hills Road where Bonnell was trying to stab one of the victims of the crash, according to court documents.

Officials said the suspect had multiple open alcoholic beverage containers in his car when they arrived on the scene.

The victim told officials he was sitting at a red light when he was rear-ended, so he got out to take pictures of the accident. Bonnell was trying to leave the scene so the victim followed him to his car, according to police.

The suspect then grabbed a knife to stab the victim but it was knocked away from him, officials said. The victim told authorities he then pinned him against his vehicle until law enforcement arrived.

While Bonnell was being restrained, he attempted to burn the victim with his lighter but the victim blew it out before anything could happen, officials said.

The victim was later transported to an area hospital by ambulance due to back pain.

Bonnel is being charged with aggravated DUI with a revoked driver’s license, aggravated DUI crash causing bodily harm, DUI, transporting open alcohol, failure to reduce speed, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and two counts of aggravated assault in public.
