College of the Atlantic's Mapping Ocean Studies project collects oral histories and spatial data to tell the story of coastal change and build a digital repository.
BAR HARBOR — Mapping Ocean Stories, a College of the Atlantic project, has received $200,000 from the Maine Community Foundation.
The project uses oral histories from fishermen and other stakeholders along with spatial data points to build a resource that provides a broader picture of climate change and adaptation in coastal areas of Downeast Maine.
Started in 2018 with support by the Fund for Maine Islands, a partnership between College of the Atlantic and the Island Institute, the MOS team has conducted over 250 unique interviews with coastal Mainers and archived and identified 350 historic interviews.
The new funding will support the further development of two key outputs of the MOS team — the Maine Historic Fisheries Atlas and the Maine Sound + Story archive, an online digital repository of oral histories, and the corresponding spatial data to publicly and openly tell the story of change along Maine’s working waterfront.
