Norfolk police arrested a man early Thursday after he allegedly assaulted a woman.

At 12:02 a.m., police responded to a physical disturbance at an apartment in the 700 block of Koenigstein Avenue, said Capt. Michael Bauer in a press release. As officers arrived, a barefoot female ran from the apartment toward the officers. She was emotionally distraught, according to police.

The female alleged that she had been assaulted by Khumbo Chiniko, 22, of Norfolk. She explained that she and Chiniko were in a verbal argument and, when she went to pack her things to leave for the night, Chiniko pushed her onto the bed and held her arms down.

The female attempted to scream, she said, but Chiniko held his hand over her mouth. The struggle continued and the alleged victim was eventually able to call 911 for assistance.

Police also had contact with Chiniko and spoke to him about the incident, Bauer said. Officers then arrested him on suspicion of third-degree domestic assault. He was housed in the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail.
