Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United delivered another chaotic but ultimately victorious performance, beating the Premier League’s bottom team Sheffield United 4-2 at Old Trafford.

Twice United trailed against Chris Wilder's side with Jayden Bogle and Ben Brereton Diaz both on target for the visitors but Bruno Fernandes helped avert another damaging result.

Here, The Athletic’s Mark Critchley examines the main talking points.

Leeds assistant manager suspended for one match

Leeds United’s assistant manager Christopher John has been suspended for one game following misconduct in their Championship match against Blackburn Rovers in April.

John was shown a red card after engaging in a brief confrontation with Blackburn staff members and expressing his displeasure to fourth official Keith Stroud. His frustration appeared to stem from Patrick Bamford being denied a penalty after he fell inside the box.

John has also been fined £2,000 for the incident.

In a statement, the FA said that John "admitted that his behaviour was improper during the 97th minute," and "an independent Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a subsequent hearing".

It means John will sit out of Leeds' Championship clash at Queens Park Rangers on Friday evening.

The transfer window for players will open when the season ends but the movement of managers has no deadline — anyone can switch roles at any point.

Jurgen Klopp’s announcement in January that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of this season after nine years at Anfield kicked off speculation over who would replace him.

Soon after, Xavi said he would be stepping down as Barcelona head coach this summer before Bayern Munich joined the party in February by confirming they would be parting ways with Thomas Tuchel, leaving three of the biggest jobs in European football open for applications. However, Xavi has now reversed his decision and will stay on at Barca.

A disappointing season for Manchester United, meanwhile, has also led to questions over Erik ten Hag’s future and a potential vacancy at Old Trafford.

So who are the managers expected to be on the move in the coming months and who is staying put?

Mount set to return for Man Utd vs Burnley

Erik ten Hag is hopeful that Mason Mount will be available for Manchester United's Premier League clash against Burnley this weekend.

Mount missed United's 4-2 win against Sheffield United on Wednesday and Sunday's dramatic FA Cup semi-final victory against Coventry City at Wembley.

The 25-year-old has missed a number of matches this season due to injury, but Ten Hag expects the midfielder to return on Saturday. He also revealed that he doesn't expect any injured defenders to feature, with Willy Kambwala, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans all out.

Ten Hag said to BBC's Match of the Day: "No, not yet (defenders returning). We have to be patient for it.

"For coming back for the game against Burnley, I don't expect (them). Mason Mount, he will return, I think."

Why a spending cap could signify a subtle but important power shift in the Premier League

So an era of unprecedented Premier League changes could be about to move into new territory — from points deductions to spending constrictions.

The asterisks which dot this season’s table in relation to punishments for clubs who have breached the top flight’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) may soon be followed by question marks on balance sheets across the division.

Should a majority of its clubs vote through the proposed hard spending cap for the 2025-26 season, it would not only aid the competitive nature of what is the world’s strongest domestic league, but also enforce a subtle shift in the perceived power base of English football.

Fernandes urges Manchester United team-mates to embrace 'demands' of club

Fernandes urges Manchester United team-mates to embrace 'demands' of club

Bruno Fernandes has told his Manchester United team-mates they have to be willing to accept criticism due to the club's status.

Fernandes starred with two goals and an assist as United came from behind twice to ease past the Premier League's bottom side Sheffield United 4-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

That ended a run of four games without a win for Erik ten Hag's side in the Premier League and came four days after they reached the FA Cup final after edging past Championship side Coventry City in a penalty shootout.

"You can be in a run of games where you win nine in a row, and when you lose one you know you'll be criticised," Fernandes said. "Being at United demands winning every game, that's part of our job. If there is anyone in the dressing room still not used to that, they will get used to it.

"Being a Manchester United player demands being ready to receive as much criticism as praise. We receive praise when we do good things so we can't be annoyed by the criticism."

United return to action on Saturday with a home Premier League match against Burnley.

Erling Haaland has been ruled out of Manchester City’s Premier League game at Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday.

City boss Pep Guardiola did confirm, though, that Phil Foden and John Stones are fit for the trip to the Amex Stadium.

Haaland missed City’s last match — Saturday’s 1-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea — with an injury, while John Stones was taken off at half-time. Sky Sports reported that Foden was not pictured in City’s opening training on Tuesday.

Teams at this summer’s men’s European Championship in Germany are set to be allowed to name squads of up to 26 players instead of 23.

UEFA had said it was considering the proposal during last month’s international break, with some national team coaches expressing their desire to see squad sizes increased over the fortnight. Earlier this month, the proposal was discussed at a workshop of national team head coaches in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The decision has not yet been confirmed by UEFA but that is expected to come following a meeting of its Executive Committee later this week. The deadline for teams to submit their squads is June 7, a week before the opening game of the tournament.

De Zerbi backs Ferguson despite difficult season: 'He is the future of Brighton'

De Zerbi backs Ferguson despite difficult season: 'He is the future of Brighton'

Mike Hewitt/Getty Images

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi still regards Evan Ferguson as “the future of Brighton”, despite a difficult season for the 19-year-old striker ending early through injury.

Ferguson has been playing in pain with a left ankle issue which has curtailed his campaign with six games left, starting with tonight’s visit by Manchester City.

“He felt pain in the ankle a lot of times,” De Zerbi said. “He tried to move on and play with pain, but in the end he preferred to stop and think about next season.”

Ferguson enjoyed a breakthrough last season, scoring 10 goals in 25 appearances for Brighton and twice in six games at international level for the Republic of Ireland.

He began the current campaign in similar vein with four goals in four outings in the Premier League, including a hat-trick at home to Newcastle, but he has been hampered by other minor injuries and scored the last of six goals in 36 appearances overall in November.

De Zerbi said: “We have to make a difference between injuries and the way of his career.

“The injuries you can’t control. The journey in terms of progressing is different.

“You have to accept that a player so young, just 19, can spend a very good moment, scoring goals, and then have a different, opposite, moment. A tough moment. Especially for a striker.

“Sometimes as a striker you can score two goals a game. Then suddenly you are not able to score even with your hand.

“But this is football, and for young players it can happen. They can play one season great and the next season not so good.”

Liverpool opening offer for Arne Slot rejected by Feyenoord

Liverpool have had an opening offer for Arne Slot rejected after making the Feyenoord head coach their preferred choice to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

The Anfield club’s pursuit of Slot did not emerge until earlier this week as they prioritised discretion and a desire to show Feyenoord respect before Sunday’s Dutch Cup final, which they won.

That approach is sure to be maintained as Liverpool enter negotiations with the 2023 Eredivisie champions and their highly-regarded CEO Dennis te Kloese with the club knocking back an opening offer of €9million (£7.7m, $9.6m).

Premier League clubs to vote on spending cap tied to income of lowest earning club

The Premier League is heading towards another contentious vote on Monday with a majority of clubs keen to add a hard spending cap to the new “squad cost” rules that are being introduced for the 2025-26 season.

Based on the concept of “anchoring”, the de facto salary cap would limit the amount of money any club can invest in their squads by tying it to a multiple of what the lowest earners get from the league’s centralised broadcast and commercial deals.

Earlier this month, the clubs unanimously backed a proposal to progress talks on the squad cost regime, with a view to finalising the new rules at June’s annual general meeting. Since then, the league has sent out proposals on anchoring and scheduled a meeting on the matter for Thursday.

Jurgen Klopp apologised to Liverpool fans after their chastening derby defeat to Everton as he admitted his team need a “crisis” at Arsenal and Manchester City to have any hope of winning the title.

Liverpool were beaten at Goodison Park for the first time in nearly 14 years as Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin punished some dreadful defending.

It leaves Klopp’s side three points behind leaders Arsenal, who have a superior goal difference, with just four matches left to play. Third-placed City are a point behind Liverpool with two games in hand.

“I really feel for the people. I am really sorry for that,” Klopp said.
