INDIANAPOLIS – The search for a pair of missing kayakers stretched into a second day Wednesday.

Trevor Sager, a conservation officer with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, said several boats were in the water, while drones and an Indiana State Police helicopter were conducting aerial searches.

Sager identified the kayakers as Solomon Shirley, 22, and Marcus Robinson, 30. Shirley was wearing a black shirt and black pants, while Robinson wore a gray shirt and gray shorts, Sager said.

The pair started in the White River at Riverside Park. A witness saw two people being ejected from their kayaks at the dam at Belmont Beach.

On Tuesday night, crews searched underwater and checked nearby embankments. Two empty kayaks were recovered.

“We are today using sonar imaging to scan the bottom of the river to see if we can pick up anything that could help us in the search,” Sager said.

Sager said search operations would continue throughout the day, concluding only when it becomes too dark to search.

“Keep an eye out down river. If you see anything we need to know, if you see any people, give us a call,” Sagar said. “Any information would be very helpful.”

The DNR is the lead agency in the search, with support from the Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indiana State Police.
