DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Decatur Police Department will roll out two of its new mobile surveillance trailers this summer.

At the end of 2023, the Decatur City Council approved purchasing the two trailers for $80,000. Lt. Erik Ethell told WAND News the council used state grants to purchase the equipment.

"We were looking for ways to bolster our effectiveness and deal with some of the crowd situations."

Decatur Police plans to use this new equipment for upcoming events, like the boat races. Lt. Ethell said the trailers will also help deter crime.

The Decatur Police new mobile surveillance trailer records both audio and video. Officers can also watch the video in real-time from their phones, squad cars, and headquarters.

"We plan to use it as any kind of special event," he explained. "Last year we had some issues with parking lot parties turning violent, so we will set them up to be a deter factor."

The video will be stored on a cloud and automatically deleted after a certain time frame.
