MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A Marshalltown woman is accused of stealing medications from multiple patients while working at a local hospital, including from a child who had suffered a dog bite.

Amanda Nicole Manatt, 35, allegedly stole prescription medications from multiple patients while she was a nurse at the Marshalltown Hospital from about October 2023 to December 2023.

According to court records, Manatt was supposed to be administering medications such as fentanyl, morphine, and Dilaudid to patients at the hospital. Instead, Manatt took those medications for her own personal use and falsified patient medical records to hide the fact that she was stealing the medications, a criminal complaint states.

In November a child was admitted to the Marshalltown Hospital emergency room after being attacked by a dog and seriously injured, court records state. Manatt was assigned to care for the child and was supposed to administer pain medication, but instead took the narcotics for herself, a criminal complaint states.

Manatt was charged with eight counts of unlawfully obtaining or attempting to obtain a prescription drug – controlled substance schedule I, II, III, child endangerment resulting in bodily injury, and tampering with records. Manatt posted a $14,000 cash bond on Tuesday. Manatt waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

An investigation conducted by the Mid Iowa Drug Task Force and the State of Iowa Medicaid Fraud Control Unit resulted in Manatt’s arrest. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said Manatt’s arrest was made in connection to a controlled substance fraud crime that was reported in the winter last year. An investigation into this matter is ongoing.
