Waking up soaked in sweat is no one’s idea of a good night’s sleep, but it happens more often than you might expect. A Gallup poll from 2023 found that 57 percent of adults in the U.S. always or occasionally feel too hot when trying to sleep. Obviously, it’s uncomfortable, but that’s far from the only problem — being too hot while trying to sleep has been shown to make it more difficult to drift off and mess with your circadian rhythm. So, finding the best cooling blanket out there for your bed can make a lot of difference in your sleep and in your day-to-day life.

Designed to help regulate body temperature, this type of bedding gives you the sensation of coolness on your skin while still keeping you draped in something cozy.

“In the evening, as the sun goes down the temperature naturally drops. That drop in temperature, along with the light changes, signals to our body that it's time to sleep. People sleep better when it is cool, therefore the cooling blankets help sleep,” explains Dr. Catherine Darley, founding director of The Institute of Naturopathic Sleep Medicine and creator of the Skilled Sleeper course.

Want to double down on getting sound sleep in hot weather? Pair your cooling blanket with a set of cooling sheets, a bedroom fan, an eye mask, and get ready to sleep soundly in high temps.

After sleep-testing seven contenders, I found the best cooling blankets to help hot sleepers chill out in dreamland.

Best Cooling Blankets

What to Consider

With so many options out there, it can be hard to find the best cooling blanket for you. Don’t sweat it, though — we’ve got you covered with the factors you need to keep in mind as you shop. Here’s what to consider when you’re looking for a cooling blanket.

Material

The material a cooling blanket is made from makes a huge difference in its breathability and chilly feel. Start by looking for plant-based natural fibers, like cotton, linen, hemp, or bamboo, says Stephannie Kia, senior soft goods technical designer at Priority Designs.

“Unlike synthetics, natural fibers possess inherent properties that allow body heat to effortlessly pass through their molecular structure,” Kia notes. “While synthetic options can mimic natural feel, they cannot replicate the functional advantages of natural fibers, which efficiently regulate moisture and heat. Specialty synthetic materials may provide similar properties but tend to be less durable and breathable as they originate from plastic.”

No matter what material you choose, make sure it feels soft and gentle against your skin. After all, you’ll be sleeping under the blanket all night, so you’ll want to find something that makes you feel cozy, too.

Structure and Density

The cooling quality of a blanket doesn’t just come from the material of its threads — it also depends on how they’re woven or knitted.“Weave structure plays a big part in how vapor is trapped and released. Take waffle knit, for example, which has little engineered pockets built in. Those pockets trap heat whereas a more open weave allows body heat to pass through it,” says Kia.

You should also consider how tightly the fabric is woven together. If you hold it up to the light and see some light pass through, there’s a good chance that the blanket will allow heat to pass through, as well. A denser fabric, on the other hand, could keep heat contained closer to your body. That’s the last thing you want if you tend to sleep hot.

Color and Size

Color sets the tone for a relaxing bedroom environment. Look for a cooling blanket in a calming hue you love like white, cream, soft gray, blue, and buttercup yellow to set a slumber-inducing environment for your bedroom. If you already have a specific interior design in your bedroom, search for a cooling blanket to match. They come in just about any color you could ask for.

Another practical consideration is size. Most cooling blankets come in standard sizes that align with the size of your mattress (twin, full, queen, king, and so on). If you share a bed with a partner who doesn’t sleep hot, you might want to opt for a smaller cooling blanket to use only on your side of the bed. Size doesn’t matter quite as much if you’re looking for a breathable throw blanket to keep you cool on the couch, though. Just look for something you can gently wrap around your body on a hot summer night.

How We Selected

To find the best cooling blankets, I researched options that have proven popular with hot sleepers and professional product reviewers. I then tested seven of these cooling blankets to see how they measure up to their stellar reputations. I slept on each one for at least one night to see how hot I felt when falling asleep and waking up, whether I had night sweats, and whether the blanket felt cool to the touch. Finally, I did research on what each one was made of, available colors and sizes, and other factors that could help each cooling blanket stand out from the crowd.

After careful review and analysis, here’s a look at the best cooling blankets to drape on your bed.

Evercool Cooling Comforter

After trying the Evercool Cooling Comforter from Rest, I’m not surprised that this cooling blanket has earned several awards and top reviews. Its proprietary Evercool fabric, which is smooth and silky, felt like air conditioning against my skin, instantly cooling me. If you told me this cooling blanket had been stored in the refrigerator, I wouldn’t have doubted you for a second.

The shell features ultra-thin fibers that work to absorb and eliminate moisture — although that’s something I can’t personally attest to since I didn’t sweat whatsoever the night I spent under this cooling blanket. Inside, you’ll find a natural TENCEL and Sorona filling blend that works to regulate temperature, manage moisture, and offer plenty of breathability. The filling gave it a pleasant level of weight without causing me to overheat.

The blanket comes in five colorways and is reversible, so you can update the look of your bedding whenever you want a refresh. Plus, it’s easy to clean. Just toss it in the washing machine on a gentle cycle and tumble or air dry it.

Between its moderate price, beautiful colors, and cooling effect, this cooling blanket was my favorite of the bunch. Rest offers a 30-night trial for the blanket, so there’s zero risk in giving it a try to see if it relieves your night sweats.

Revolutionary Cooling Comforter

If you want a cooling blanket that doesn’t break the bank, check out the Elegear Revolutionary Cooling Comforter. It has the lowest price tag of any option we tested (ranging from $43 to $79) and feels almost as cool as our top pick, the Rest Evercool Cooling Comforter. I almost got goosebumps from how chilly it felt against my skin in bed. I still felt cool when I woke up underneath this cooling blanket the next morning as if all of my body heat had dissipated.

It does fall short of our best overall pick in a few key areas. For one, it’s thin, so it doesn’t give the same weighted sensation as a comforter. It’s also really slippery. I had a hard time keeping myself wrapped in this blanket throughout the night. I wish it had just a bit more grip to help me sleep better. Finally, it can’t be put in the dryer. That adds a level of complication on laundry day that no one needs.

Still, for the price, you can’t beat it. This cooling blanket comes in five colors and even has piping that makes it feel much more high-end. It would make a great Mother’s Day gift for a mom who needs a seasonal upgrade for her bed ahead of the hot summer months.

UltraCool Comforter

I’ve always dreamt of having a bed piled high with fluffy white fabrics like you see in ads for five-star hotels. Slumber Cloud turned that fantasy into reality when I draped the brand’s UltraCool Comforter over my bed. It’s the fluffiest blanket I tried. It not only looked magical but also felt delightful when I slipped under the covers.

While I initially worried that a blanket this cushioned would induce night sweats in no time, those fears were unfounded. The Slumber Cloud UltraCool Comforter delivered a pleasantly cool sensation from its nylon-Spandex jersey shell, which helped me fall asleep fast. I didn’t even have to turn on the fan I normally use in my bedroom to prevent me from feeling too hot.

I found the “ClimaDry” fill to be as soft and fluffy as typical down feathers, but far more breathable. I didn’t sweat a drop when I slept under this cooling blanket.

Even though it’s more expensive than other cooling blankets, the Slumber Cloud UltraCool Comforter is worth the investment for its silky-smooth fabric, diamond quilt-boxing design that keeps the fill from bunching up, and super fluffy look and feel. I would be thrilled to sleep under this comforter any season.

Breeze Comforter

This temperature-regulating blanket impressed me the moment it showed up at my door. I loved its stitching, which reminded me of ocean waves, and the convenient loops for tying on a duvet cover.

Its eucalyptus shell doesn’t feel as cool to the touch as other cooling blankets, but I usually keep it tucked within a linen duvet cover anyway, so that doesn’t bug me. Ultimately, though, it’s the temperature-balancing qualities of this blanket that have kept me sleeping under it for literally hundreds of nights. The eucalyptus fiber fill is the real MVP when it comes to breathability.

If you’re looking for a temperature-regulating blanket to keep on your bed in all four seasons, this is the one to get. It keeps me just warm enough in the winter, perfectly cool in the summer, and balanced in the in-between seasons. I also recommend this as a gift for high school grads who will soon need a versatile blanket for their dorm bed. Buffy even offers it as part of a cooling bundle, complete with a sheet set, duvet cover, and pillow.

True Temp Blanket

I’ve never had an easier time making the bed than when I tried the True Temp Blanket from Sleep Number. It’s stitched with dozens of perfectly aligned rectangles that not only help keep the filling in place, but also make it a breeze to drape atop the bed. It was a joy not to feel overheated during this morning chore.

Speaking of the filling, that’s one area in which this cooling blanket stands out. It’s made from Sleep Number’s special 37.5 Technology, which uses active particles from natural volcanic minerals to capture heat and moisture, regulating changes in body temperature that occur while we sleep. My body temperature felt balanced and cool throughout the night.

While this cooling blanket didn’t feel quite as chilly to the touch as some of the others, its advantages far outweigh its flaws. Choose from five different colors to set the right mood for your bedroom.

Cloud Comforter

Ever wonder what it’d feel like to sleep on a cloud? You can get pretty close with the aptly named Cloud Comforter from Buffy. This blanket, which went viral online several years ago, is one of the loftiest ones you can find for your bed. While it could feel a bit cooler to the touch, the Cloud Comforter is a master of breathability. Having the weighted feel of a comforter without any overheating helped me sleep like a baby.

Another design feature I love about this blanket is its fill and stitching. Rather than using loose down or polyester fiber, Buffy fills the cloud Comforter with 105 ultra-fine layers of recycled PET fill, which is both eco-friendly and airy. It helps keep the temperature consistent beneath the blanket, so you won't experience any hot or cold spots. Plus, it has a unique stitching line across the comforter to help keep everything exactly where it belongs when you toss it in the washing machine.

This blanket won’t let you down if you want something with lots of loft that won’t leave you drenched in sweat at night.

Waffle Knit Blanket

Love wrapping yourself up in all-natural fibers? Check out this waffle knit blanket from Saatva. It’s made from 100-percent long staple cotton that is naturally hypoallergenic and works to wick moisture away (take that, night sweats!).

While it doesn’t feel super chilly against the skin, it does offer a ton of breathability. You won’t feel like you’re overheating when you’re curled up under this blanket. The thick, three-dimensional weave features square pockets that keep the air circulating.

It makes a great alternative to a traditional comforter, which might feel too stuffy in warm weather, or as a top layer for a bed to give it a finishing accent. It could also be a lovely throw blanket to have on the couch. I could see myself cocooned in the Saatva Waffle Knit Blanket for a movie marathon on a breezy summer night.

This blanket’s three color options all feel luxurious, so I think it’d make a coveted housewarming gift. Just be sure to throw it in the wash first — the taupe one I tried had a strangely medicinal smell that lingered for a few days after I unboxed it.
