Zaire-Emery shows incredible flexibility and reach to stretch his leg out high and bring down an overhit pass in the Dortmund box.

He goes past his first defender and rolls the ball across the face of goal, but it just eludes his team-mates and Dortmund are able to clear.

Jadon Sancho has been excellent in the first 30 minutes of this game. He looks the most likely player on the field to make something happen, drifting off the right side and gliding past his opposite numbers with ease. Nuno Mendes has struggled to deal with him so far.

PSG's 'first pressure' (i.e. the pressing by the frontline) has not worked effectively so far.

Julian Ryerson, the Dortmund right-back, is left as the spare man from PSG's man-on-man set-up and on a few occasions now, the hosts have been able to avoid the pressing of Barcola, Mbappe and Dembele before picking out Ryerson, who has had acres of space to drive into. It is moving his team up the pitch each time.

The two Dortmund flanks are operating nicely. Maatsen-Adeyemi down the left and Ryerson-Sancho on the right are both well balanced. Pace, cover, intent; lots going on and plenty for PSG to worry about.

Dortmund build a promising attack off the back of a free kick near the corner. Sancho jukes and eludes defenders before setting Brandt up to hit a thunderous shot from the edge of the box, which PSG manage to block via Marquinhos.

Contrasting midfields

28' Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain

It's fun to compare the two teams' midfields.

Dortmund's is pretty prosaic, with Emre Can acting as the destroyer and Marcel Sabitzer a slightly awkward-looking, gangly presence, but the pair offering plenty of strength, power and solidity.

While PSG's midfield is technically superb, comprising the lithe lefty Fabian Ruiz and diminutive, floaty playmakers Vitinha and Warren Zaire-Emery, but lacking a little in physicality.

How they match up to each other will continue to be an interesting subplot throughout the evening, no doubt.

Niclas Fullkrug is struggling to get into the game up top for Dortmund – he was desperate to win a header that just wasn't his from that goal kick moments ago.

PSG had quite a few issues dealing with Robert Lewandowski's aerial presence in the quarter-finals, so we were expecting to see a few more long passes aimed towards him!

Mbappe combines with Ruiz and nearly receives the ball right in front of goal, but it just gets away from him and the chance passes.

Ian Maatsen was rightfully booked for that reckless lunge on Warren Zaire-Emery, but the challenge was more notable for what didn't happen that what did.

Instead of rolling around on the floor or screaming in mock agony, the teenager rode the tackle, bounded to his feet and tried to carry on.

A rare, refreshing reaction to a bad tackle.

A knock to Lucas Hernandez leads to a brief break in play. Luis Enrique uses that time to dish out some tactical instructions, taking a white iPad out to Bradley Barcola to help illustrate a key message or two...

Moments after Jadon Sancho played Emre Can into trouble with a dangerous backwards pass when he could have cleared it, PSG's Nuno Mendes was fortunate as he twice gave the ball away rather than getting rid of it.

Sancho and then Julian Brandt failed to make the most of the opportunity, though.

I appreciate this makes me sound like a Sunday League Luddite, but there's a time and a place to play out, and a time and a place to just whack the ball upfield...

Sancho's positioning opens up space for both teams

17' Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain

It is interesting that Sancho has started on the right for Dortmund. PSG's most effective flank is generally their right side, in terms of ball progression and creativity, and that would have required extra defensive discipline this evening.

So far, Sancho's switch is allowing him to affect the game at the other end, and the hosts are having a fair bit of joy so far on this side.

First big opening of the game falls to Dortmund and Sabitzer. The hosts currently have the edge in duels; this is not the most physically imposing PSG side.

Sancho wins the ball back off Nuno Mendes and Sabitzer's run is incisive but just runs too wide, allowing Donnarumma to close the angle.

Big chance for Sabitzer!

14' Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain

Sancho wins the ball from PSG and Brandt releases Sabitzer down the right. He advances into the box and has a great shooting opportunity, but Donnarumma makes himself big to block his shot.

Brandt has an opportunity to do something with the rebound but his cutback is weak.

Good start from Dortmund. It was important that they began the tie by playing purposefully and by showing some expression, particularly in front of this crowd, and they have done that so far.

We've had a first shot in anger as Dembele turns on the edge of the Dortmund box and fires, dragging his shot wide of the far post.

The other side of the coin

10' Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain

After being found by Emre Can a few minutes ago, right-back Julian Ryerson just had acres of space to gallop into, with Nuno Mendes already marking a man and no sign of Ousmane Dembele.

It's all well and good Dembele and Bradley Barcola swapping wings in attack, but they need to track back, too. That was a Manchester United-esque amount of space in midfield.

Dortmund will punish that kind of defending unless PSG improve.
