Texas Teen Goes Viral For Taking His Mother to Senior Prom

An 18 year old from Corpus Christi, Texas, is going viral after he took his mother to his prom last week.

Joe Angel, a senior at Collegiate High School, took his mother Vanessa as his prom date, officially fulfilling a promise he made to her when he was in middle school.

Angel shared photos from the event on Twitter, which have since gone viral, raking in more than 26,000 retweets and upwards of 163,000 likes. “My mom had me at the age of 17 she dropped out of high school to focus on giving me her all,” he wrote alongside the sweet photos. “Last night I gave her the prom night she never had.”

Speaking with KRISTV, Vanessa said she always imagined she would experience milestones like prom and graduation, but a typical teenage life was no longer an option after she became pregnant at a young age.

"It was a sacrifice that I had made. My sacrifice was to give my children my all. I put everything into him. I push them to become everything they can," Vanessa told the local news station, referring to Joe and his siblings. "It was something I felt I had to sacrifice so that I could work and give to my child without anyone else helping me."

Vanessa explained how Joe promised to take her to his high school prom when he was in middle school because he knew she missed out on hers.

"Senior year came up and he brought up prom and I kept asking who he was taking, and he kept reassuring that it was me," she recalled.

Vanessa said she felt like a teenage girl again while shopping for a prom dress. Joe even gave her a corsage when he picked her up.

"We danced and danced... it was great," she said.

Vanessa admitted to KRISTV that being recognized for the sacrifices she’s made is a bit overwhelming—in a good way.

"Sometimes people don't know the sacrifices us mothers make,” she said. “We just hope that it does get seen, and I am so glad my son did see my sacrifice and wanted to give back. It meant the world to me."
