Hundreds of dogs descended on a Newcastle restaurant for a day of fun, socialisation and lots and lots of cuddles.

Dog events company Pug Cafe returned to Revolucion de Cuba, in Newcastle's Cloth Market, on Sunday, bringing events for three different adorable breeds of dog.

The company's aim is to allow pups to socialise with other dogs of their breed - the idea being that different breeds have different "quirks" and can therefore play most happily and safely with large groups of their own kind.

On Sunday, cockapoos, pugs and dachshunds took it in turns to take over the bar.

By the afternoon, a total of 267 dogs and 601 humans had taken part. Some of the humans were dog owners - others were simply keen to spend time around the adorable animals.

Organiser Anushka Fernando said: "It's so important, especially for puppies and younger dogs. Some breeds can be a little bit more fearful around other dogs, it's just their nature, so it's also really important to keep socialising your older dogs, to get really happy, confident dogs."

She said different breeds often found it easier to understand the behaviour of others of their own kind, and therefore found these meetups a more relaxing and positive experience.

"For example, pugs together are just fantasic," she said.

"Pugs have really flat faces so they have almost no depth perception, with other breeds they'll go right up to their snouts, which are there for protection, but with other pugs that's ok.

Dogs got to meet it each other but also enjoy cuddles from some adoring humans

"They understand each other's little quirks and it's just a great place to start socialising your dog, especially if they've missed out during lockdown."

The large open space in the restaurant which is safely penned off so that pups can roam around freely inside offers a unique experience for most dogs, Anushka added.

She said: "When you come into the event it's like a kids' party but for dogs.

It was the first time such an event was held for cockapoos in Newcastle

"The dogs are entering a space with other dogs that are just like them and they are able to sniff and play freely and, honestly, they come out so happy.

"It's a really nice day out."

There were plenty of treats on offer for the pups, with a 'dog-friendly bakery' offering the likes of 'pupcakes', 'dognuts' and dog-friendly cookies, as well as a doggy pick and mix stall.

Anushka added: "My dog has been by my side throughout the ups and downs of lockdowns, and I know so many people who would not have coped without their furry sidekick. So this day is for them."
