Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel on game-deciding 4th down stop: Titans defense was 'well prepared'

Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel said his defense was prepared for the Buffalo Bills' game-deciding 4th and 1 play late in Monday's game.

The Titans got the stop on a Josh Allen sneak from under center with 22 seconds left at the Titans' 2 to preserve the 34-31 win for Tennessee in Nissan Stadium. Jeffery Simmons and Naquan Jones made the contact on Allen, but the entire Titans front looked privy to the play.

"Give our guys credit, give our staff credit," Vrabel said after the game. "(The Bills offense) tried to walk into one and our guys adjusted quickly without hesitation. They were well prepared for that and they were able to execute. Obviously the players were the ones who were able to get the push and get the penetration. We got in there as he walked under center."

It's been a characteristic of Titans defenses over the last three seasons — give up a bunch of yards and points, but get just enough stops to give the offense a chance.

And this, from ESPN after the game: the Bills are now 13-of-14 in converting first downs on 4th and 1 on running plays while Josh Allen has been on the team, since 2018.

Bills coach Sean McDermott lamented the offense's ineffectiveness inside the red zone. Buffalo scored two touchdowns, two field goals and had the late turnover on downs in five red zone trips on Monday.

"In the end of the day, we didn’t get the job done. I didn’t get the job done," McDermott said. "They did a good job in the red zone. We should have scored more — our red zone stats were 2-for-5, they were 3-for-3."

"Felt good about our chances. Had a chance to win the game right there and we didn’t get it done."
