Bear in attack was likely seeking food

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is searching for a bear in the Red Feather Lakes area of northern Larimer County after responding to a reported bear attack Tuesday night.

Ty Peterburg, area wildlife manager, said the attack involved a family of four who were in a tent in a camping area on U.S. Forest Serve property off Larimer County Road 67J (Prairie Divide Road).

The bear trampled the tent, likely in an effort to find food, Peterburg said. An adult male was transported to the hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Wildlife officers are searching the bear and will use all available means to immediately remove it from the area.

Officers remind the public to be “bear aware” and to take precautions to keep bears out of their cars and camping gear. If the campground provides bear boxes to stow food, use them. Campers also are encouraged to use bear-resistant coolers and keep food out of sight in a locked car.
