Hundreds back weekly’s call for change on road ‘blighted’ by crashes

Hundreds of readers have backed a weekly newspaper’s bid to make a road which passes through its patch safer for drivers.

More than 900 people have signed the Royston Crow’s petition calling for change on the A505 between Royston and Baldock – just a fortnight after it was launched.

The Crow began the campaign after a number of crash, which have “blighted” the road for years.

The road has a 70mph speed limit, but the Crow says this is incompatible with several cut-through junctions in the central reservation for access to villages, slip lanes that are too short and poor visibility.

Crow editor Nick Gill said: “We have made a great start – but it is only that, a start. We are realists and know change takes time – but showing the strength of feeling right now can only help our cause.

“Herts County Council is due to conclude a feasibility study in March, so time really is of the essence. So I urge you to sign our petition and share it with friends – reaching 1,000 by next week is now the aim.”

Mum-of-three Lynsey Langdon started her own safety campaign after her policeman husband Greig broke his back at a crash in 2016, and the Crow will be working closely with her in the months to come.

She told the paper: “I am grateful to the Crow for backing this – you’re our local newspaper writing about issues that affect our community. We hope that, with the Crow fighting for improvements too, something will be done – and soon.”
