DB Regional Library plans sci-fi movie marathon

If you enjoy sci-fi thrillers, stop by the Daytona Beach Regional Library, 105 E. Magnolia Ave., on Monday, July 8. Staff will show three popular films that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

• “War of the Worlds” (1953): 10 a.m. As Earth is invaded by alien tripod fighting machines, one family fights for survival. Rated G, 85 minutes.

• “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (1954): Noon. Scientists searching for fossils along the Amazon River discover a prehistoric “gill-man” in the legendary Black Lagoon. Rated G, 75 minutes.

• “Inception” (2010): 2 p.m. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a thief who steals corporate secrets through dream-sharing technology. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes.

Pilot Club sets monthly meeting

The Pilot Club of Daytona Beach will host its monthly business meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at the Palmetto Club, 1000 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach. Enjoy dinner for $20. Book groups to review ‘Crawdads’

Readers can share their insights during book discussions at the DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave. The groups will meet at 10 a.m. July 10 and 5:30 p.m. July 11 to review “Where the Crawdads Sing,” a New York Times bestseller by Delia Owens. The novel revolves around Kya Clark, an abandoned child who grew up alone in the North Carolina marsh. The painfully beautiful book exposes the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Edgewater book club to review ‘Henrietta Lacks’

Members of Edgewater Public Library’s Books ‘n’ Brunch Book Club will share their opinions

of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at the library, 103 W. Indian River Blvd. The book tells the true story of Lacks, an African American woman whose cells – taken without her knowledge in 1951 – became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization and more.

This club meets on the second Thursday of each month to discuss books of all genres. Light refreshments will be served. New members are welcome. Registration is not required. For information, call 386-424-2916.

Ormond library offers free computer classes

Adults can improve their computer skills with free classes at the Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St. Upcoming beginners programs include:

• Basic internet: 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 11. Participants will learn the basics of the internet and how to use it.

• Basic Word: 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 18. This class will cover such topics as highlighting and changing the size, font and color of text.

• Basic e-resources: 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 25. Learn about the electronic databases the Volusia County Public Library system offers.

Participants may bring their own laptops. Eight library laptops, which use a Windows 10 operating system, are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are required. For information, call 386-676-4191, option 4.
