TBT to the time Dale Earnhardt Jr. honored Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes with his car

Yes, you read that right.

Back during the 2002 NASCAR Cup Series season, 10 days after TLC’s Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was tragically killed in a car accident, racing team Dale Earnhardt, Inc. had all of its cars honor the late singer – including Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet.

Lopes died on April 25 that year, and for the spring Richmond Raceway Cup Series race on May 5, all of the cars had a stripe added underneath their left headlights, honoring the stripe she often wore under her left eye.

Teresa Earnhardt – the wife of the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. and stepmother of Junior – was the CEO of the racing team at the time. According to Motorsport.com, she was influenced to honor Lopes after graphic postmortem photos of the singer were published on the internet, reminding her of the legal battle she faced keeping Earnhardt Sr.’s autopsy photos private following his death during the 2001 Daytona 500.

At the time, Teresa Earnhardt said, via Motorsport.com:

“When I first heard the news that such highly personal and private photos of Lisa Lopes were posted online, my thoughts and sympathies immediately went to her family. I wrote them personally to express my condolences because I know what pain they must be going through. The stripes on the cars are something we can do to remember her and call attention to the fact that her loved ones should be protected from this invasion of privacy,” said Earnhardt.

“Families in Florida are protected, but unfortunately in this case, Lisa, her family, friends and fans aren’t afforded that basic respect, although they unquestionably should be. The actions of the website are a sad and constant reminder that we are in an age where the internet has the harmful ability to instantly spread personal information without regard for privacy or dignity. For all of the good that the internet does, it can also do lifetime damage in the hands of irresponsible people. We’re dedicating everything that we accomplish in Richmond this weekend to Lisa and those who love her.”

The Chevrolets driven by Michael Waltrip and Steve Park – in addition to Junior’s No. 8 – displayed the black stripe.
