After trying to make it in the NFL as a running back, Blake Sims is returning to an old position — quarterback.

The former Alabama quarterback told AL.com that he has signed with the Birmingham team in the Alliance of American Football, a new spring league that is set to begin in 2019.

Sims briefly played in the CFL after going undrafted following his college career with the Crimson Tide. He then tried to play running back in the NFL, signing with the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad in 2016, but getting released 10 days later. Sims was also on the Tampa Bays Buccaneers’ practice squad for eight months in 2016-17.

Sims had not played since getting waived by the Buccaneers on Aug. 28, 2017.

After spending 2010-13 as a running back and backup quarterback for Alabama, Sims won the starting quarterback job for the 2014 season. He went on to start all 14 games, throwing for 3,487 yards and 28 touchdowns, helping lead the Tide to an SEC championship. Sims was named second-team All-SEC.

Sims isn’t the only former Alabama player expected to play for the Birmingham team in the AAF, as former Tide running back Trent Richardson also recently told AL.com that he plans to sign with the franchise.

Sims returned to Alabama in March to play quarterback at the Crimson Tide’s pro day, a performance that perhaps led him to this most recent move.

“That just showed me I can still play,” Sims said at pro day, according to AL.com.
