Pompano Beach has six commission jobs up for grabs on the Nov. 6 ballot, and 19 candidates running to fill them.

The jobs include an open mayor’s seat, three open commission seats, and two commission seats held by incumbents who are facing challengers. Qualifying for the races ended Friday.

The city is undergoing a development boom on the beach, but is facing challenges attracting retail and restaurants to the northwest section. Its new leaders will also deal with the oversight of $181 million in upgrades to the city’s parks, roads and bridges.

Mayor Lamar Fisher is vacating his post with two years remaining on it to run for county commission. Current city commissioners Rex Hardin and Michael Sobel are vying to replace him. So are political newcomers Debresia LeSane and Cynthia D. Floyd.

The mayoral position, which pays $36,803.94 a year, is the only position the entire city elects.

The other commission seats, paying $34,350.37 a year, are for two-year terms.

Two veteran candidates — Rhonda Eaton and Thomas E. Terwilliger — are facing off against each other to fill the District 2 seat that Charlotte Burrie is retiring from after 11 years. The district is roughly defined by Interstate 95 to the west and Federal Highway to the east. That section of the city faces a high concentration of sober homes.

Four people are running to represent District 1, which Sobel is vacating to run for mayor. They are John Cavanaugh, John Geer, Andrea McGee and Donald McNiel. The district is the city’s most eastern slice – defined by Federal Highway and the ocean.

Michael Skversky is facing off against Thomas McMahon to take the District 3 seat Hardin is leaving for a mayoral run. The district is in the southeastern part of the city, roughly bordered by I-95 to the west and Federal Highway to the east.

District 4 City Commissioner Beverly Perkins has two challengers: Ed Phillips and Carmen D. Jones. The northwestern district is roughly bordered by Dixie Highway to the east and Atlantic Boulevard to the south. There, the city has started an art initiative that has begun attracting residential development.

District 5 incumbent Commissioner Barry Moss is facing three newcomers: Luciene D. Gomes, David Miller and Leila K. Moavero. The district is roughly bordered by Florida’s Turnpike to the west, I-95 to the east and Atlantic Boulevard to the north.
