Episode four of the extraordinary HBO crime drama True Detective was technically its best to date. It was also my least favourite. Saturday’s Who Goes There began, in the words of last week’s episode title, a locked room, a prison cell. It ended with a magnificent aerial shot of a housing estate from which police and drug dealers — some dressed as police — swarmed in utter confusion. Part of the writer Nic Pizzolatto’s genius is his adroitness with his narrative zoom, from the domestic to the political, confinement to panorama.
