A roundup of items from Thursday:
REMEMBERING BUXTON: The Iowa House on Thursday commemorated the former community of Buxton, which was near Lovilia in Monroe County.
A coal-mining community in the late 1800s, Buxton had many African-Americans and immigrants from Europe and Australia. Buxton was notable because its businesses and organizations did not discriminate against any citizen on the basis of race.
Buxton, according to House Joint Resolution 104, stood “as a model of cooperation and respect among people of diverse heritages and backgrounds.”
The resolution encourages “all Iowans to recall the spirit of unity and harmony embodied by the people of the city of Buxton.”
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “As legislators, we are tasked with separating the wheat from the chaff, and in this discussion it seems like there was a whole lot of chaff thrown into the wind here.” — Rep. Gary Worthan, R-Storm Lake, commenting on a debate on HF 2255 regarding contraband in community-based correction facilities
