ODESSA, Mo. — Family and friends are mourning the death of a 12-year-old boy, who was discovered in the icy water of a lake in Lafayette County, Mo., Monday afternoon.

Devin Fossett was reported missing by his father on Monday, after he found some of Devin’s belongings by an ice-covered lake in the area of Kite and Newton Roads, south and west of Odessa. The Odessa Fire Department had to navigate rough terrain and by the time they reached the water, it was too late to save him.

“Deputies located some personal items, a pellet gun and a dog on the shorebank. They saw the area in the ice where they thought he’d been in,” Odessa Fire Protection Chief Kevin Campbell said.

When firefighters arrived at about 1:30 p.m., they went into the water wearing specialized cold water suits and found Devin unconscious. They tried to revive him but were unsuccessful.

Devin was a student at Odessa Middle School and active in the wrestling program. He was also said to have a love for the outdoors.

“He was an outdoors type, it wasn’t uncommon for him to go out into the country and walk around,” Chief Campbell said. “But it was unusual for him to be gone this long.

Chief Campbell said because less than 6,000 people live in Odessa, Devin’s loss is felt by everyone in town. A Facebook page was started and includes kids Devin’s age offering condolences.
