Caddie Steve Williams claims he was treated 'like a slave' by Tiger Woods in explosive new book

  • Steve Williams spent 12 years as Tiger Woods' caddie from 1999 to 2011
  • Williams and Woods infamously fell out after stopping working together
  • Williams' new book re-opens wounds with former world No 1 Woods

Bed-ridden after his second back surgery in two months, the last thing Tiger Woods needed right now was for the old wounds of his multiple infidelities to be reopened.

But new light has been shed on Woods’s infamous ‘indiscretions’ by his former caddie Steve Williams, the New Zealander who assisted the former world No 1 to all but one of his 14 major victories but is now estranged from his former boss.

Williams has released a new book, Out of the Rough, in which he describes what life was like working for Woods.

As well as telling his side of the story on the revelation of Woods’s many mistresses, Williams also describes how his paymaster had ‘other bad habits that upset me’, including treating him ‘like I was his slave’.

‘He was well known for his bad temper,’ writes Williams in an extract of the book published by New Zealand media

‘I wanted him to prove to me he could change his behaviour and show me – and the game of golf – more respect.

‘One thing that really p***** me off was how he would flippantly toss a club in the general direction of the bag, expecting me to go over and pick it up.'

'I felt uneasy about bending down to pick up his discarded club – it was like I was his slave. The other thing that disgusted me was his habit of spitting at the hole if he missed a putt.’

Williams’ choice of language is particularly controversial given the history of conflict between the pair.

After Woods had sacked his caddie of 13 years in 2011, Williams celebrated wildly when his new employer, Adam Scott, won a World Golf Championship event a month later.

He stunned the world by explaining his behaviour with an extraordinary racist comment about Woods: ‘My aim was to shove it right up that black a*******.’

Williams, 51, also goes on to reveal how he felt let down by Woods in the wake of his sex scandal, claiming that he and his family were hounded by media and not protected by Woods's management team.

The pair were considered good friends when Woods’s behaviour was first exposed, but Williams insists he had no idea of Woods’s philandering and was angry that agent Mark Steinberg would not make that public.

'People in my local community would front up to me at the shops and call me a liar to my face, and ask 'what are you doing with him?' Williams wrote. 'I repeatedly asked for Tiger's management to release a statement that would clear me of any involvement in this lurid news.'

'They simply wouldn't do it because there were others in his group who knew exactly what was going on and management felt they couldn't single out one person as innocent.'

‘Only a handful of his oldest buddies actually had any idea this was going on. I didn't know because Tiger didn't dare tell me.'

'We had such a strong bond and working relationship that there was no way he could let me in on what was happening – he knew my values and that I would have zero tolerance for that kind of behaviour.'

Williams said he didn't have 'any sympathy' for what Tiger did to his wife Elin Nordergren, who was close with his own wife Kirsty.

'I believe you're in charge of your own actions and I have no sympathy for people who get addicted to drugs or gambling or sex,' he writes.

'But I did have sympathy for the way he'd had to suffer in front of the world when others would have been able to sort out their mess in private.'

Williams said he didn't hear from Tiger for four months after it was revealed he had an affair with nightclub promoter Rachel Uchitel.

But Williams said he felt 'incredibly loyal' to Tiger and never considered quitting during 'the toughest time of his life'.

‘Regardless of the morality of the matter, he was still a friend in trouble and I was going to stick by him.'

'I did that even though people were accusing me of being an enabler, an accomplice, saying I was lying when I stated clearly that I knew nothing about this.'

'For months on end, my life was absolutely miserable.’

Williams writes that he was constantly hounded by the press for information, and that even his five-year-old son Jett was coming home from school where people were talking.

'Why do people say you're bad?', Williams recalls his son asking him one day.

Williams wife Kristy said that when Tiger called her up to apologize she had also asked him to clear her husband's name in the media - but he refused.

'When he told me he couldn't, I asked why not, and he told me that if he cleared Steve's name, the media would start asking if anyone else knew,' she writes.

'And they did, so basically he was covering their butts and letting Steve suffer.'

Williams said he is still asked the same question over and over: 'How could you not know about Tiger's multitude of mistresses?'

'It's a valid question,' he writes. 'How could I spend so much time with him and not have an inkling this was going on? The answer, in a roundabout way, is that Elin didn't know either.'

And neither did the world, that is until the night on Novemeber 2009 when Elin chased her former husband out of their home with a golf club.

The National Enquirer had just published a story about Tiger's alleged affair with Uchitel.

It was a headline Elin all but confirmed when she spotted a text the golfer had written Uchitel that read 'You are the only one I've ever loved', according to the New York Post

Tiger, who had already taken sleeping pills for the night, ran out of the house and into his Escalade, Elin following behind him.

He then crashed his car into a fire hydrant before hitting a tree.

It would end up changing everything, as more and more women began telling of the alleged affairs they'd had with the legendary golfer.

Uchitel, waitresses Mindy Lawton, Jaimee Grubbs and Jamie Jungers, porn stars Holly Sampson and Josyln James and exotic dancer Cori Rist all publicly claimed they have slept with Tiger.

Just a month after the crash, Tiger was dropped from endorsements with Gatorade, Nike, Gillette and Accenture as the number of mistresses ticked to 14.

Tiger then entered the Gentle Path rehab center in Mississippi for sex addiction, where he allegedly admitted to cheating with as many as 120 women.
