Women's Soccer Falls to Smith, 2-0

Pioneers score once in each half to thwart Engineers

TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Peyton McBride assisted on a pair of goals to help the Smith College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Wednesday night at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 4-2, while the Engineers drop to 1-3.

After the Engineers dominated possession for the opening 20 minutes, Smith struck on the break to take a 1-0 lead. McBride (Manchester, NH/Goffstown) took the ball up the right flank, before cutting a cross towards the middle of the 18 for freshman Zufan Bazzano (Great Barrington, MA/Monument Mountain), who ripped a shot past RPI junior goalkeeper Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) for her team-leading fourth goal of the year.

The Pioneers took their one-goal edge to halftime, despite being outshot 10-5, including 4-1 on goal.

Smith quickly doubled its lead early in the second half, thanks to senior Krissy Williams' (Stockbridge, MA/Monument Mountain Regional) first tally of the year. McBridge once again provided the assist - her third of the young season - making it a 2-0 advantage for the visitors.

RPI picked up its assault on the Pioneers goal, but could not find a way past freshman Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, MA/Sutton Memorial) who made 10 saves to earn her third shutout of the year. Freshman Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA/Design Tech.) registred a game-high five shots, including four on goal. Her best chance came in the 66th minute, when her right-footed strike from distance skimmed just wide of the right post.

A corner kick from freshman Emma Skantze (Tampa, FL/Land O Lakes) found sophomore Michelle Lomoz (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) in the middle of the box, but her shot and another from junior Talia Williams (Downington, PA/Downington STEM Academy) were blocked away by the defense.

The Engineers finished with a 14-5 second shot advantage for a 24-10 overall edge. Corner kicks were even at 4-4.

RPI is back in action on Saturday, when it hosts SUNY Cortland at East Campus Stadium (2pm). Smith hosts Wellesley on Saturday (2pm).
