Pitt softball takes series from North Carolina

Softball 4

The Pitt softball team has been up and down this season but the Panthers are at least off to a good start in the conference.

This weekend, the team took two out of three games from North Carolina (12-15). And while they’re only 15-11-1 on the season, Pitt is 4-2 in ACC play and has won both of their series (previously defeating NC State). The Panthers are currently tied for second place in the Coastal Division.

Pitt dropped the opener 8-4 on Friday but rebounded nicely. On Saturday, the team picked up a 6-3 win and the Panthers took the series with a blowout 10-2 win on Sunday.

The MVP in the series was easily power hitter Giorgiana Zeremenko. Zeremenko, who became the program’s all-time career home run leader this season, hit a home run in all three games. She also hit three doubles and finished 7-10 in the series.

The team had struggled lately, dropping games to Stony Brook, Rutgers, and Michigan coming into the series, so it was good to see them get back on track. And just as importantly, the Panthers have now won four of their six ACC games. Those are important because, as we saw last year, playing poorly in conference can result in you missing out on the conference tournament. The Panthers were over .500 on the season but didn’t even make the ACC tournament so winning these games is essential.
