49ers waive TE, WR to make room for 2 new WRs

The 49ers haven’t made an announcement, but they officially signed wide receivers JJ Nelson and Tavon Austin after both players showed up on the practice field Saturday. San Francisco released tight end Daniel Helm and wide receiver Chris Thompson in a corresponding move to keep the training camp roster at 80 players per Matt Barrows of the Athletic.

Austin and Nelson are both speedy receivers who’ll contend for roster spots, with Austin competing as a punt returner as well. Reports surfaced Friday that the 49ers would sign both players. Their presence in practice made the move official.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the NFL to cut training camp rosters to 80 players instead of 90, which is why the 49ers had to release two players along with their new additions.

Helm was an undrafted rookie with the Chargers last year before landing with the 49ers. He played on their practice squad and spent time on the active roster, but didn’t see any game action.

Thompson has had multiple stints with the 49ers and was a long shot to push his way onto a roster spot.

With injuries to Deebo Samuel and Richie James Jr., the 49ers needed some better depth at receiver. Austin and Nelson should provide that in camp.
