Foiling is not the easiest way to ride a wave. When some of the best surfers in the world suck at it, you know it’s true. Take something Grant “Twiggy” Baker said about it a few years ago: “I enjoy feeling like a kook again. Learning something new – and with foiling, if there are a few people in the lineup, I’m at the end. I’m the worst surfer in the lineup.”

But Laird Hamilton has long been a man who pushes the boundaries. The world was first really, truly introduced to the foil when Step Into Liquid hit the silver screen. Laird, along with The Strapped Crew, jammed their feet into snowboard boots, put the wing on the bottom of a tow board, and yanked each other into very, very big waves. Now, of course, foiling is growing in popularity, thanks to people like Kai Lenny, but Laird is still very much a fan. On a recent trip to bombing Cloudbreak with Benny Farris, Laird showed that he’s still got it.
