In Obama's Hometown, Billionaire Support Favors GOP

This article is more than 10 years old.

It may be the president's turf, but Chicago is also Mitt Romney's kind of town.

Two Illinois billionaires have donated a combined $1.1 million to Restore Our Future, the super PAC supporting Romney's presidential campaign.

Hedge funder Kenneth Griffin has given $1,050,000 and real estate baron Sam Zell has given $100,000.

Both men also contributed to American Crossroads, the super PAC founded by Republican strategist Karl Rove. Griffin has given $1 million since August and Zell has contributed $100,000. Griffin also sent $440,000 to the Republican Governors Association this year.

Altogether, Chicago billionaires are leaning heavily to the right, giving a total $2.4 million to the Romney campaign, GOP super PACs and GOP national committees. The tally for contributions to the Obama campaign and Democratic committees is less than $364,000.

So far, Zell and Griffin are the only Chicago billionaires reported to have contributed to presidential super PACs.

Griffin, head of Citadel Investment Group, doesn't always support the GOP. He gave $150,000 to Mayor Richard M. Daley in his last re-election campaign. He and his wife, Anne, gave $200,000 to support the mayoral bid of Daley's successor, former Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

He told the Chicago Tribune in March that the government's response to the 2008 financial crisis motivated him to step up his political activities.

"I spend way too much of my time thinking about politics these days because government is way too involved in financial markets these days," he told the Tribune.

None of the city's Democrats on the Forbes 400 list is reported to have made a contribution of more than $35,800.

However, several have made five-figure donations.

Casino magnate Neil Bluhm was a fundraiser for Obama in 2008 and holds the same role again this year. The campaign reports that he has raised between $200,000 and $500,000.

Penny Pritzker, who was national finance chair for President Obama's 2008 campaign, has contributed to Obama 2012, the Democratic National Committee and the party's congressional campaign committee.

Yet the support for Obama isn't unanimous within the Pritzker family. Gigi Pritzker Pucker, Penny's cousin, gave $2,500 to the Romney campaign.

Here's the Chicago billionaire rundown:

Kenneth C. Griffin, Citadel Investment Group

J. Christopher Reyes, Reyes Holdings

M. Jude Reyes, Reyes Holdings

Patrick G. Ryan, Aon Corporation (founder)

Sam Zell, real estate

Democratic donors
