An Aurora man has been charged with aggravated DUI and reckless homicide in connection with a fatal crash over the weekend on the city’s southeast side that killed a Kankakee man who was a passenger in his vehicle.

James Malone, 29, has also been charged with aggravated DUI with a suspended license and various traffic-related offenses in connection with the one-car crash that killed Gus Bester, 32, of Kankakee, Aurora police said.

Aurora police and firefighters were dispatched at 3 p.m. Saturday to Pearl Street and Sherman Avenue. The car being driven by Malone, a 1987 Chevrolet Caprice, was traveling east on Sherman Avenue when it left the road and struck a large tree in the front yard of a house.

Bester, a passenger, was pinned inside the vehicle, unconscious and not breathing, police said. He was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Malone, of the 800 block of South Fifth Avenue, was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said. He was moved to the Kane County Jail Monday night and appeared in bond court Tuesday morning.

Malone was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, police said.
