The deciduous specimen, estimated to be 80 years old, was carved up by council workers on Wednesday.
The street, between the Star Hotel and Kiewa Street, was closed to traffic from 9am to shortly before 3pm for the operation.
A team of council workers removed foliage and branches before tackling the trunk and leaving a stump barely above ground level.
Stump removal specialists will go into action at the site on Thursday, uprooting the tree’s remnants.
The street will again be closed from 9am to 3pm.
The tree was poisoned in February 2016 with four holes drilled in its base and a herbicide applied.
Albury councillor Murray King, who lives in Guinea Street, stalled a plan to remove the tree last year, arguing it should be given a reprieve to determine if it would revive.
It will be replaced with a mature Chinese elm.
