Richardson Police Department’s new K9 is on the job and sniffing out crime

Hondo, a 2-year-old German shepherd, is the seventh police dog to serve with Richardson police.

One of the newest members of the Richardson Police Department is a K9 named Hondo, and he’s already making an impression.

The 2-year-old German shepherd is certified in narcotics detection and has to date uncovered methamphetamine, heroin and a stolen gun.

Hondo is also undergoing regular training of about 25 hours a month to learn how to patrol. That means he’ll be learning typical police dog skills such as officer protection, apprehensions, tracking, searches of buildings and open areas, and evidence recovery.

“He’s got a lot of personality; you know every dog is different like any person,” officer Cory Wendling, Hondo’s partner and handler said in a July 16 video presentation.

Hondo is a very independent dog, but loves to work, Wendling said.

Hondo rides in a custom-made patrol car with a climate-controlled kennel in the back. The car and his collar both display Hondo’s name.

“You’re a team,” Wendling said. “Yes, they’re a dog. But we work as a team. I’m on the dummy end of the leash, really. He does all of the work.”
