A damaged power pole on Friday night left much of downtown Hollywood without electricity, but FPL crews fixed the problem by the next day, officials said.

The outage caused streetlights to stop working, and stop signs were placed in the middle of the street to warn people as police directed traffic. Some businesses used generators.

The power pole snapped while FPL crews were working on it about 11 pm. Friday, bringing down power lines and causing the outage that affected most of the downtown, according to a notice from the city of Hollywood. Cable and phone lines also were affected.

The power pole began to smolder in an alleyway between Hollywood Boulevard and Harrison Street in Downtown Hollywood. Firefighters blocked the area for safety and notified FPL, according to the city. No one was hurt.

On Saturday morning, the north side of Harrison Street and south side of Hollywood Boulvevard between 19th Avenue and 21st Avenue remained without power, the city said. And Hollywood Police directed traffic away from 20th Avenue.

Tyler Mauldin, an FPL spokesman, said all power was restored by noon Saturday, and the cause of the outage remained under investigation.
