The excitement around the much-loved and anticipated reboot series The L Word has not only gone and escalated as the team behind the show announce a new showrunner for the program.

Writer/director Marja-Lewis Ryan will take the steering wheel of The L Word sequel, besides the original creator Ilene Chaiken as Executive Producer and actors Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey.

‘Ilene and the original L Word made me believe that my voice mattered,’ Marja-Lewis told Hollywood Reporter.

‘I am beyond excited for the opportunity to usher in the next generation of diverse queer people. I couldn’t imagine a better time to make this show.’

It was announced in July that the reboot was in development on a sequel to The L Word, which revolved around a group of lesbians in West Hollywood and their friends, family and lovers.

It ran on Showtime from 2004-2009 and was quickly praised as the first drama series to focus on lesbian characters who are complex and open about their sexuality – even inspiring the introduction of spin-off The Real L Word in 2010.

The reboot is set to introduce a new group of what Showtime described as self-possessed LGBTQIA characters experiencing love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success on the east side of L.A.

As expected fans had a little melt-down on Twitter.

The sixth season of The L Word is slated to air on Showtime in 2018.
