Five teenagers charged with stabbing of 20-year-old in Nottingham

"Esrom was a wonderful young man that was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished"

Five teenagers have been charged with the stabbing of Esrom Ghide in Nottingham. The 20-year-old was fatally stabbed on Wednesday.

Died in hospital

Ghide was found stabbed in Hawksley Road, Hyson Green in Nottingham. He died of his injuries in hospital.

The boys charged, each of whom are aged 14 to 17, will appear in Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 10 September. Three of those charged are aged 14.

“An amazing son”

Ghide’s family have described him as “an amazing son”.

“Esrom was a wonderful young man that was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished,” said his family in a statement.

“Hanny, as he was called by his family and close friends, was an amazing son, and big brother and his passing has left a big hole in our lives.”

“No family should have to go through this”

Detective Inspector Justine Wilson, who is leading the investigation, told the Nottingham Post: “Knife crime has a huge impact on families and whole communities and Esrom’s family has been left devastated by his loss.

Police have appealed for further information, stating that “no family should have to go through this.”

“There is no need to carry a knife in Nottinghamshire,” said a spokesperson from the force.

“This is a fast-moving investigation with five youths already in custody but we would still like to hear from anyone who has information that could help.

“Please call us on 101, quoting incident number 710 of 5 September. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Highest level in six years

The number of knife crimes in Nottingham are at their highest level in six years.

On the back of these stats, Chief Inspector Donna Lawton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said to the Nottingham Post: “A 17 percent rise in convictions should send out a clear message to those involved in knife crime that they are now even more likely to end up in prison.

“We won’t accept knife crime on our streets and neither will our communities, who we continue to work alongside to make Nottinghamshire even safer.

“The fact we have the only dedicated knife crime team outside of the Met shows we are committed to tackling knife crime and the team’s high success rate using intelligence-led stop and searches is helping us bring more people to justice and take weapons off the streets.

“We are here to keep people safe and if people keep talking to us and telling us about people they suspect are carrying knives then we would hope convictions will rise even higher as our county becomes even safer.”
