On-loan striker Ross Stewart scored a first-half hat-trick as Alloa beat Arbroath to draw level on points with their League One play-off rivals.
Garry Fleming opened the scoring with a penalty before two quick goals from Stewart made it 3-0 inside 15 minutes.
Michael McKenna replied for Arbroath but Stewart completed his treble three minutes before the interval.
Bobby Linn made it 4-2 before Iain Flannigan scored Alloa's fifth, Danny Denholm netting a further consolation.
The prolific Stewart, on loan from Championship leaders St Mirren, has now scored seven goals in nine games since his arrival in late December.
Victory moves Athletic level on points with third-place Arbroath, and four points clear of fifth-placed Stranraer.
