House fire killed 2-year old twins in Batavia

An investigation continues into a tragic house fire in Batavia that killed two-year-old twin boys Friday night. According to news partner News10 NBC, Sheriff's deputies said the victims were twins Michael and Micah Gard. An autopsy later revealed the boys died from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded just after 10 p.m. to the 8100 block of State Street Road in the Genesee County community, about half a mile north of Batavia High School.

Deputy Chief Dan Coffey of the Town of Batavia Fire Department said that the fire started in the back of the two family home. The boys were found in a back bedroom in the first floor of the home and investigators believe they were home alone at the time.

A 911 call from a neighbor alerted firefighters to the blaze. Chief Deputy Jerome Brewster of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office said that investigators are looking into the possibility that the boys may have been left home alone before the fire started.

An ambulance took the mother of the boys that died to the hospital. Genesee County Fire Investigators were at the scene of the fire Saturday morning. Firefighters saved three kittens from the blaze. Heavy flames prevented bystanders from entering the home, according to the report. Red Cross volunteers helped tenants of the two apartments inside the home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
