Jared Martin took over as head coach of the Ohio State field hockey team this fall. Fortunately for him, he had a veteran goalkeeper to call on.

Senior Liz Tamburro (Owen J. Roberts), of Phoenixville, is in her fourth season in front of the goal for the Buckeyes. She entered this season having started 53 of 54 games, giving up 138 goals with 351 saves, with six shutouts and a 21-32 record facing most of the top field hockey teams in the country.

“Having a player like Liz on the team in my first year is one I have truly cherished,” Martin said. “She is an impact on and off the field. She plays such an important role for our defense with her knowledge and organization but she also has the ability to make pivotal saves when the situation calls for it.”

The Buckeyes are 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the tough Big Ten Conference after losing 3-2 in overtime to Stanford on Sept. 30 and beating Cal-Davis 1-0 on Oct. 1, both games in Davis, Calif. Tamburro had four saves against Stanford and two against Davis. The Buckeyes’ three league losses were 3-2 in overtime to Northwestern, 1-0 in overtime against Michigan and 2-1 in a shootout against Michigan State.

“Liz will leave Ohio State with her name all over the record book but she will leave an even bigger legacy because of the love she gave to this program and her ability to compete like a champion in all aspects of her life,” Martin said. “Her field hockey career may be wrapping up but she will have an amazing life and I’m happy I was a small part of it.”
