The report cards released Thursday by the Ohio Department of Education assign grades from A to F for a series of performance standards, plus overall grades for the first time. A summary describing the letter-graded categories can be found below.

The overall grade

For the first time, schools and districts received an overall letter grade. this grade was calculated using results from six "components" - achievement, progress, gap closing, improving at-risk K-3 readers, graduation rate and prepared for success.

Achievement (20 percent of overall grade)

Progress (20 percent)

  • Progress looks closely at the growth that all students are making based on their past performances.

Gap closing (15 percent)

Improving at-risk K-3 readers (15 percent)

Graduation Rate (15 percent)

  • Graduation Rate looks at the percentage of students successfully finishing high school with a diploma in four or five years.

Prepared for Success (15 percent)

Performance index: How well did students perform on the tests overall.

Value added: A measure of growth by individual students.
