AN elderly woman in her 80s has been air lifted to Townsville Base Hospital in a critical condition after being struck by a car.

Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident this morning which has left her fighting for her life.

The 25-year-old female driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Any information should be passed onto Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 as the Forensic Crash Unit continue to investigate.

EARLIER: An elderly woman has been hit by a car this morning while crossing a street outside a North Queensland library.

The 80-year-old woman was crossing Herbert Street in Bowen about 10:50am when she was hit leaving her with severe head injuries and multiple fractures to the right side of her body.

Emergency services are on site with a medical helicopter due to fly her to Townsville hospital for further treatment.
