Billboard Dance Chart Upstarts: Jena Rose, Galantis & Throttle, Above & Beyond

Jena Rose, “Sweet Love”
Hailing from Plano, Texas, just-turned-17-year-old Jena Rose (full name: Jena Rose Raphael) jumps 44-34 in her second week on Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs chart (dated Jan. 13) with “Sweet Love.” It’s the first main Billboard chart action for the singer, although her “Crazy,” featuring Sean Kingston, rose to No. 37 last July on the Mainstream Top 40 Indicator chart (which tracks airplay on a panel of mostly small-to-medium-market radio stations that help expose new music). Rose, who wrote all tracks on keyboard for her Drew Scott-produced debut EP (due at the end of March), will open for sibling pop act Echosmith on its Inside a Dream tour, beginning April 4 in San Francisco. “Sweet” was remixed by Nitemover, Angel Manuel and Country Club Martini Crew, among others.
Rose tells Billboard, “I started playing piano when I was five years old and started singing, songwriting and performing when I was nine. I knew that music was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life ever since my very first performance at the House of Blues in Dallas. ‘Sweet Love’ is about breaking free from a bad relationship and finally feeling like yourself again. I want to inspire others to live life to the fullest and have fun doing it.”

Galantis & Throttle, “Tell Me You Love Me”
Swedish duo Galantis (Linus Eklow and former Bloodshy & Avant member Christian Karlsson), teaming with Melbourne, Australia-based DJ/producer Throttle (real name: Robbie Bergin), returns to Hot Dance/Electronic Songs at No. 47 with “Tell Me You Love Me.” The track, which debuted two weeks ago at No. 42, is the 12th chart entry for Galantis and the first for Throttle. Remixes from Toby Green, DropGun and Michael Feiner, among others, were released Dec. 15. The song, originally from Galantis’ album The Aviary (which hit No. 4 upon its Oct. 7 debut on Top Dance/Electronic Albums), amassed 394,000 U.S. streams in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music.
Above & Beyond featuring Richard Bedford, “Northern Soul”
English trance trio Above & Beyond (Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki) barrels 27-14 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay with “Northern Soul,” featuring Richard Bedford. The lead act’s seventh chart appearance, “Northern” has now traveled, well, above and beyond any track since its first, “Sun and Moon” (also featuring singer Bedford), which reached No. 6 in 2011. “Soul” scores the vast majority of its radio play from core-dance stations, including SiriusXM’s BPM, Music Choice’s Dance/EDM channel and WFLZ-HD Tampa, Florida (an iHeartRadio Evolution affiliate).
