A woman from Savannah and a man from Clyo died in a two-vehicle traffic accident on Old Augusta Road S. in Effingham County Friday night, the coroner said.

David Exley said Nathaniel Johnson of Clyo and Sandra Raife of Savannah died in the crash at about 7:30 p.m.

Johnson was driving a Dodge Caliber southbound that appeared to run off the road, overcorrect and drive into the path of a Ford Flex, Exley said. Raife was a passenger in the Caliber.

The driver of the Ford, a woman from Rincon, was seriously injured and taken to Memorial Hospital.

The accident occurred near the Lake Cherie trailer park. The weather was clear at the time.

The two people who died were entrapped in their car. Exley said he believes they died when the collision occurred.

There was a minor fire that was extinguished with a fire extinguisher.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office, EMS personnel and Rincon firefighters worked the wreck. Exley said the Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
