Obituary: Richard Carroll, 72, New Canaan Resident & Army Veteran

Mr. Carroll was the President of American Transit Insurance Company in Brooklyn, New York, where he had worked for 34 years.

The following obituary of New Canaan resident Richard Carroll, 72, is from Hoyt Funeral Home:

Richard T. Carroll of New Canaan, Connecticut and Harwich, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly on July 20, 2018.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Susan Carroll, his daughter Molly, son-in-law Bill and granddaughter Elizabeth Grace Cole of Hingham, Massachusetts, and his sister Ruth Ryan of Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Mr. Carroll was the President of American Transit Insurance Company in Brooklyn, New York, where he had worked for 34 years.

Mr. Carroll was a 27 year resident of New Canaan and coached youth soccer and basketball. He was an avid golfer, reader, boater and do-er of The New York Times crossword puzzle.

Mr. Carroll was a graduate of both Fairfield Prep and Boston College. He proudly served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the New York Athletic Club for 35 years. He was also a member of Mill River Country Club and Yale Golf Club.

His infectious laugh, melodious voice and zest for life will be sorely missed. His family and friends were all better for knowing him. In lieu of flowers, please honor Dick’s generous spirit by donating to the Catholic Academy of Bridgeport, 63 Pequonnock Street, Bridgeport CT 06604 (Attention: Sr. Joan Magnetti).

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, July 27th at 12:30 pm at St. Matthew Church in Norwalk, CT. Visiting hours at the Hoyt Funeral Home on Thursday July 26th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
