A 72-year-old Marysville woman was killed when struck by a vehicle while she was walking along Hammonton-Smartsville Road Thursday morning.
Jamila Habib, 72, was walking in an unknown direction, approaching Lowe Avenue around 7:30 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle, the driver of which didn’t see her, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.
Virginia Castaneda, 45, of Marysville, was driving her Dodge Caliber south on Lowe Avenue and stopped at the stop sign at Hammonton Smartsville Road. She failed to see the pedestrian and started to accelerate to make a left turn, striking Habib.Â
Habib was transported to a local emergency room with major injuries, where she was later pronounced dead.Â
Castaneda had four passengers in the car with her, ranging from age 5 to 21; they were all wearing seat belts and were not injured. Drugs or alcohol are not suspected in the collision, according to CHP.Â
Castaneda was not arrested; but CHP plans to send its investigation report to the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office with a recommendation to charge her with vehicular manslaughter. Public information officer Jodie Beck said the decision to ultimately charge Castaneda will be decided by the DA’s office.
