HAGATNA, Guam (AP) - Tropical Storm Goni brought flooding and power loss to Guam this weekend, but conditions have improved as the storm moves on.
By Sunday, most flooding had been cleared and roads were safe to travel, the Pacific Daily News reported (https://bit.ly/1HPUoL1 ).
Goni dropped between 14 to 18 inches of rain on Guam over two days, causing heavy flooding. While most of that is now cleared, officials say any additional rain could trigger more flooding on the already saturated gorund.
Power has been restored, but some residents on the southern part of the island are still waiting for water.
People in Malojloj, low-lying Merizo and parts Inarajan were still waiting for Ugum Water Treatment Plant to go back online. There aren’t any power problems there, but officials are waiting for the rain to stop so they can properly test the water, according to Guam Waterworks Authority spokeswoman Heidi Ballendorf.
“The plant will resume operation when it stops raining,” said Ballendorf. “In the meantime we are trying to send them water from up north.”
Flooding at a Guam Power Authority substation caused Tumon residents to lose power. Crews had to pump out the water to repair an underground splice.
Other areas, including Barrigada and Yigo, lost power because of arcing power lines.
“As far as we know, all power outages that were reported have been addressed and restored,” said Nic Lee of the governor’s office.
Island shelters at Astumbo, Talofofo and Geoge Washinton were also cleared. On Saturday, 173 residents sought shelter there.
