Prince & Mayte Garcia: Prince Never Recovered From Death Of Two Babies

The death of music icon Prince brings to mind how much the “prolific singer” suffered when he and ex wife Mayte Garcia lost their son, Gregory. Hollywood Life remembers the sad day when Prince’s son died at only one week old in December, 1996, the same year that Prince and the 18-year-old Mayte were married.

What should have been the best Christmas present ever for the couple turned into a nightmare of tragedy when Gregory was diagnosed with “Pfeiffer syndrome, a rare defect of the skull.” Pfeiffer syndrome is a rare genetic disorder known to affect the skull and bones of infants.

The couple had prepared a beautiful nursery for Boy Gregory, complete with a playroom and a backyard swing set. Mayte and Prince wanted to give their son everything he could ever need to live a happy life, and instead suffered enormously themselves from his loss.

Prince and Mayte struggled to cope with their “devastating” loss, even going to the point of appearing “within days” on The Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about their precious baby boy and show Oprah all the preparations they’d made for welcoming Gregory into their lives. They even “acted as if their child was still alive.” Mayte explained that she and Prince felt the need to be strong, and to believe that having a baby and becoming parents was possible for them.

“We had to show people that we were strong, that we had faith, and that we would try again.”

Mayte and Prince did keep trying to have a baby, but more tragedy was in store for them. A second pregnancy a short time later ended in a “horrific miscarriage” that left the couple reeling. Mayte said she “didn’t want to speak to anybody,” and had no way to process her grief.

“I was physically distraught. When you miscarry your body is freaking out, like ‘Why can’t I feed the baby?’ so those were the things I went through. Every day was a struggle even to breathe.”

So sad! Prince’s ex believes that the loss of two babies was too much for them to bear as a couple and that led to their breakup. In the wake of Prince’s untimely death, the Mirror reported on Mayte’s reaction to the death of Boy Gregory and the subsequent miscarriage. What Mayte had to say shows just how hard it must have been on Prince as well as on herself.

“To lose two babies is really scary… it really caught on me emotionally, physically, everything. It took me at least 15 years to get over it and still, to this day, I miss my son.”

A dancer who’s been with Prince’s show for five years came forward to talk about the “devastation of losing their children.” Lindsley Allen spoke to People magazine about Prince’s life and death and the sadness he too often felt.

“It was really sad. It was very difficult for them and I don’t think they really recovered from that.”

Prince died at a relatively youthful 57 years old after being found “unresponsive” in an elevator at his Minnesota home, Paisley Park. There have been rumors of flu or drug overdoses as possible cause of death, but ABC News reports that there will be no clear answers until the results of the autopsy are in. RIP Prince.
