We knew before tonight's MTV Movie & TV Awards that the Fast & Furious series was going to win the Generation Award, which celebrates grand contributions to the world of film and television.

What we didn't know was just how touching Vin Diesel's speech would be, where he remembered his great friend Paul Walker – who starred in the film franchise before his death in a car accident in 2013.

Looking back over a decade and a half, Vin remembered when he and Paul were being awarded for their work on the early Fast & Furious films.

"In 2002, I was standing on this stage, and MTV had given Paul Walker and I an award for Best Duo," he recalled. "And now, 15 years later, I'm with my whole family, and you're giving us the Generation Award.

"Most importantly, I got to thank our generation. I got to thank a generation that was willing to accept this multicultural franchise where it didn't matter what colour your skin was or what country you are from – when you're family, you're family."

Vin finished his speech with a direct tribute to Paul, remembering the much-missed actor using his affectionate name of Pablo.

"I could never stand on the stage and talk about Fast & Furious without giving love to my brother, Pablo, our brother Pablo – we hope you are proud, thank you so much."
