The new Major Lazer video, which has amassed over 1.5 million views on YouTube, was shot in India.

Major Lazer had a smasher of a concert tour through India earlier this year, playing at packed gigs in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. The electronic music act made up of Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire, however, extended its stay and association with the country. Their latest single, Lean On, featuring vocalist MØ was shot in Mumbai, and has already notched over 1.5 million views on YouTube.

The video features backup dancers performing a fusion Bharatanatyam with MØ for most of the track. Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire make cameos too, with Bollywood moves combined with swag — hilarious, but still cool. Mikhail Mehra, the man behind Oji, who booked the act for India along with VH1, has multiple credits on the video.

Other than being a producer, he is also the associate director for it. Mehra says that the scenes with the setting of a palace were in fact a set at ND Studios, Karjat, used for the Zee TV’s show Jodha Akbar. The other scenes were shot on a bus driving through Virar. Mehra says, “Diplo knew he wanted the video to have shots of a palace, and of a bus, the decked-up, heavily-crowded kind. It was a crazy schedule, but it’s great to see the response it has generated,” he says.

But the shoot would not have been complete without a touch of madness that defines Major Lazer. Mehra says, “When the backup dancers were travelling to the set, they were stopped by cops for suspicion of human trafficking. It’s only after they saw their dancer’s union cards that they were convinced. That delayed the shoot by hours.”
