Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies attempting a traffic stop were pulled into a high-speed chase just before 4 a.m. Friday.

Instead of pulling over, the driver sped off and reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, barreling north on U.S. 231 toward Crawfordsville.

When deputies managed to catch a glimpse of the man’s license plate, they backed off for safety concerns, notifying Crawfordsville police that the speeding car was headed their way.

Ultimately, the car crashed over a curb and struck a tree near a Taco Bell restaurant, according to a release from Ryan Needham, chief deputy of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver and his male passenger were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Crawfordsville then transferred to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

The driver was transported by ambulance, but the passenger was airlifted.

Needham noted that officials are still working to confirm the identities of the two men involved.
