Millard Public Schools to offer free breakfast, lunch for students through summer
The end of the school year means the end of reliable meals for some metro students, but one school district wants to change that, by offering something to eat to kids in need through the summer."On days when me and my husband work, it's nice to just come down get some lunch, get some breakfast," Janica Ogle said.Ogle is just a like a lot of moms in the metro: busy and looking to make life a little bit easier. The mother of three was excited to bring her children down for the Millard Public Schools kickoff of free summer meals."I like it because you can come hang out, meet some other people, kids get out of the house, get around other kids," Ogle said.The MPS district will offer free breakfast and lunch for students throughout the summer. Wednesday's kickoff included a BMX performance, games and food both parents and kids could get excited about."They love hot dogs and the fruit and the salad and the carrots," Ogle said.After looking at their demographics, MPS officials realized the community was changing and there was a serious need for the program."Hunger doesn't take the time off in the summer," MPS Superintendent Jim Sutfin said. "It's a need and kids need to know consistently where that next meal comes from."Students will get more than food every day."We will have two staff members here that will work on literacy and math enrichment for the kids," Sutfin said.The initiative is appreciated by many parents."It's expensive to feed children. It really is," Tara Smith said. "I think this is wonderful to have the opportunity to come and eat."Meals this year will only be offered at Holling Heights Elementary School near 138th and Harrison. MPS officials hope to have a second spot open for next summer.
