Central Michigan player puts baseball on ice

Chase Rollin played five different positions for the Central Michigan University baseball team last season - third base, shortstop, second base, left field and designated hitter.

He can probably add right wing to that list.

Rollin, a sophomore on the CMU baseball team, got in some early baseball practice, donning ice skates to work out on an ice-covered Theunissen Stadium infield.

His video has drawn more than 1 million views on Twitter and 1.4 million views on Instagram.

“I haven’t played hockey, and I don’t really skate,” Rollin said. “I took lessons when I was so young that I don’t remember taking them.”

But after indoor baseball practice, Rollin decided to stop and take a look at the baseball stadium. When he saw a sheet of ice covering the infield, he called his roommate, Matt Milbourne, who had skates.

“I knew everything was ice, but when I saw it I had an idea and called Matt,” Rollin said. “I told him to get down to the baseball field and bring his skates. We started messing around a little. We were only out there for about 15 minutes. It was fun.”

With Milbourne recording, Rollin started working out wearing ice skates and taking ground balls hit by his brother Ty Rollin, who is also on the CMU baseball team.

“We honestly didn’t really have a plan at all … just wanted to video a few ground balls,” Chase Rollin said. “I liked diving on the ice. I actually dd that a couple times.”

CMU’s baseball season begins Friday, but at a warmer locale. The Chippewas travel to Alabama for games Friday, Saturday and Sunday against Troy. On Friday, Feb. 22, the Chippewas play in the Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas and then will spend March 2-10 in Kissimmee, Fla., as part of their season warm-up.

"Obviously, Chase is a good skater, and he's creative," CMU baseball coach Jordan Bischel said. "He's a pretty good athlete and can move around pretty good, as you can see on the video."

"It's winter in Michigan. There's always snow and ice, but that ice storm we got last week created a nice little ice surface at the stadium, and Chase took advantage of it."

Rollin was an all-state outfielder at Beal City High School.
