NAPA COUNTY — The Snell Fire is currently burning through the Berryessa Estates community in Napa County at a “moderate rate of speed,” according to Cal Fire.

Just before 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Cal Fire responded to the vegetation fire.

Cal Fire has not reported any damaged structures or injuries as of yet, however, 180 structures are threatened.

A week later, the fire was 2,490 acres and 95 percent contained.

Along with prison hand crews, 17 bulldozers have been working across extremely rugged terrain as three helicopters put out the flames from above.

If terrain has made it difficult to put the fire out it also may have also saved dozens of homes. Putah Creek has been beneficial in keeping the blaze at bay.

Steven Bowen had a front row seat to the Snell Fire as it menaced his father’s home in Berryessa Estates through the night. But when it hit Putah Creek it turned.

“Just burned literally along the river. It never jumped the river,” Bowen said. “The ashes started coming over the houses and we’re like, ‘That’s not good.’ And that’s when you can see, it literally follows the river.”

It turned the fire and served as a ready supply of water for the helicopters that were keeping up a near-constant air attack on the fire Sunday evening.

Breezes were light through the day Sunday, which helped keep the fire sluggish.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
